Online retailer, this is how you offer better service to your customers – without additional costs

Home delivery is the most preferred delivery method for online shopping in the Nordics and worldwide – but Finns have been accustomed to picking up their parcels themselves from parcel lockers. New options are believed to bring doorstep deliveries back into favor with Finns.

“More and more online store customers are tired of having to pick up parcels themselves from faraway pickup points – sometimes from a completely different location than where they were ordered. We believe it’s high time to bring back a truly customer-oriented service to the delivery market, where parcels are delivered all the way to the home,” says Jakeluyhtiö Suomi CEO, Marko Toivari.

Jakeluyhtiö Suomi, founded and owned by Finnish media companies, has delivered over 500 million shipments to Finnish homes. Until now, the agile company, which has focused on letters and magazines, is now utilizing its expertise in online store package deliveries.

“We want to shift the tasks that have fallen on recipients back to the responsibility of the deliverers. It is a matter of honor for us that parcels are delivered all the way, and the customer knows where the parcels are. For example, we take a picture of the parcel left at the door,” says Pekka Jouppi, responsible for Jakeluyhtiö Suomi’s package services.

Growing markets for home delivery

According to a recent consumer survey conducted by Taloustutkimus, home delivery is currently the preferred parcel delivery method for 37 percent of Finns. Jakeluyhtiö Suomi believes that the demand for home deliveries will grow with the new delivery options. Suomipaketti Kotiin S is delivered directly to the mailbox or letterbox, and Suomipaketti Kotiin XL is left weather-protected outside the door.

“Especially the weather-protected delivery method left outside brings a much-needed option to the market. Parcels weighing up to five kilos are brought directly to the customer’s door or hung on the mailbox or door handle. The convenient and photo-documented service is designed to meet online store customers’ wishes for flexiblehome delivery,” Jouppi says.

The online store parcel distribution market is in strong, 10 percent annual growth.

Better service at the same price

Jakeluyhtiö Suomi’s competitive edge is created by an efficient and environmentally less burdensome operating model: parcels travel on the same delivery route with newspapers, magazines, and letters. This enables fast, agile, and cost-effective home delivery.

“For online retailers, this means they can offer their customers better service without increasing delivery costs. We can also deliver an order placed in the evening by the next morning – directly to the front door,” Toivari says.

The new delivery model improves service especially outside the Helsinki metropolitan area, in regions where Jakeluyhtiö Suomi already has a comprehensive early delivery network. The company, which has steadily expanded its delivery area, reaches around two million Finnish households.

“It was important for us to find a delivery partner who can reliably deliver products directly to our customers’ homes. We have noticed that the possibility of reliable home delivery is a clear competitive advantage – especially when it does not increase costs. Our customers have particularly praised the delivery reliability,” says Production Director Jussi Valli from Storia Logistiikka. Storia Logistiikka is a Hyvinkää-based service company specializing in internal logistics, sending over 800,000 online store shipments annually.

Easy to implement

During early 2024, Jakeluyhtiö Suomi will introduce ready-made integrations for popular online store platforms. With Shopify, Magento, and WooCommerce plugins, implementing the service is easy and fast for online stores using these platforms.

“Online retailers have wished for the simplest possible way to implement our service. Now that the technical side is taken care of, we can start serving a wider range of online store customers,” Toivari says.

The company targets medium and large online stores as its customers. Potential is seen especially in the clothing, shoe, and accessory categories, where products are suitable in size for mailboxes, letterboxes, or doors.

“We believe that doorstep delivery will gain market share in Finland as well, as long as the service is made convenient and cost-effective enough for both online retailers and consumers. It is a big competitive advantage that we already have a comprehensive home delivery network and competitive prices,” Jouppi adds.

Finnish service for Finns

Jakeluyhtiö Suomi is a company owned by Finnish media houses. For years, it has been responsible for, among other things, the distribution of letters and magazines in various areas in Finland.

“We have strong experience and expertise in delivery work. Now we are bringing this expertise to the parcel delivery of online stores as well. We want to be a fresh alternative that offers genuinely better service with a challenger attitude,” Jouppi sums up.

For online retailers, this means an opportunity to differentiate from competitors with better delivery service. Recipients are offered in Finland a functioning customer service that is genuinely reachable. Cost-effectiveness, in turn, benefits all parties.

JAKELUYHTIÖ SUOMI AND MATKAHUOLTO COLLABORATE IN PARCEL DELIVERY

Matkahuolto and Jakeluyhtiö Suomi have started collaborating on parcels delivered to mailboxes. The collaboration offers consumers a new, reliable option for sending small parcels to mailboxes and letterboxes.

“Matkahuolto has emerged as the leader in customer experience and recommendation among transport companies in surveys, and we have been named the most positive parcel operator. Thanks to our advanced services and expanded service network, we can offer our customers a genuine alternative to Posti also for mailbox deliveries,” says Kati Nevalainen, director of Matkahuolto’s parcel services.

The service can be conveniently purchased from Matkahuolto’s website by selecting the XXS-sized domestic parcel and adding the delivery service to the mailbox or letterbox. The additional service costs two euros, making the total price for a mailbox-delivered parcel €6.90. The dimensions of a mailbox-delivered parcel are at most 3 x 25 x 40 cm, and the weight is up to 1 kg.

Matkahuolto delivers XXS parcels to mailboxes and letterboxes within 2–4 days, depending on the connection. Delivery is generally done with morning newspapers, and in the Helsinki metropolitan area, as day delivery. The parcel’s journey can be tracked through Matkahuolto’s shipment tracking throughout the journey. The delivery area covers most Finnish households, including the Helsinki metropolitan area, Turku, Kuopio, and Oulu.

“The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the popularity of online shopping, and more and more consumers choose home delivery when shopping online. We have piloted mailbox delivery for almost a year with the other danish guy online store. Now we are bringing the option to our consumer customers as well. We will continue to expand the service during the spring for our other online store customers and companies sending parcels,” Nevalainen says.

“Jakeluyhtiö Suomi has become a significant player in the Finnish postal market in a few years, especially in the distribution of business letters and magazines. We are constantly striving to expand our delivery of parcels to homes. Our newly announced collaboration with Matkahuolto is a significant and important part of our expansion in parcel delivery,” says Jakeluyhtiö Suomi’s CEO Marko Toivari.

POSTAL COMPETITION CONTINUES IN PIRKANMAA AND SATAKUNTA

PISA Jakelu Oy to start postal delivery in the autumn

Posti announced last summer that it would buy Alma Manu’s early delivery business in Pirkanmaa and Satakunta. Alma Manu will continue distributing Jakeluyhtiö Suomen products until September this year, after which the cooperation will end.

However, for Jakeluyhtiö Suomi, the only competitor to Posti in the market for addressed letters and magazines, Pirkanmaa and Satakunta are so significant areas that the continuity of delivery in the area had to be ensured.

“It is extremely important for our customers that there is an alternative to Posti in as large a part of Finland as possible,” says Jakeluyhtiö Suomi’s CEO Marko Toivari.

As a result, the owners of Jakeluyhtiö Suomi have founded a new delivery company, PISA Jakelu Oy, in the Pirkanmaa and Satakunta area, which will join Jakeluyhtiö Suomi’s network as a new postal company. “It’s great that our owners are committed to long-term postal competition. With this solution, we can continue to offer our customers the alternative they demand in Pirkanmaa and Satakunta as well,” Toivari continues.

PISA Jakelu Oy is currently planning the delivery areas and routes in more detail. Recruitment for expert and supervisory positions is underway. By the end of the year, approximately 50–60 postal workers will be hired for the area. The delivery is intended to start gradually from August-September.
